Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Don't Forget - Wightman Road Closed for 5 months from Next Tuesday (29th March)
In case it's escaped your notice or slipped your mind, Wightman Road will be closed to through traffic for five months starting next Tuesday 29th March.
This will be a significant dislocation to North London traffic movement. So much so that warning notices have been placed as far away as Archway. No doubt it will also have a significant impact on Harringay's traffic.
However, there really is no alternative to at least partial road closure. The railway bridge between Alroy and Wightman roads is being replaced and there will simply be no road for a few months!
One option the Council could have taken would have been to simply reroute the traffic via the Ladder rung roads. It is to their credit, however, they recognised that with over 16,000 vehicles a day using Wightman Road, this would have placed an intolerable burden on our narrow residential roads, already beset by undue traffic volumes.
After consultation with residents, the solution decided upon is to place blocks at regular intervals along Wightman Road, in effect creating clusters of two or three rung roads. Whilst this will retain unfettered access for residents. it will render the whole Ladder, including Wightman, useless as a rat run. Quite what it will mean for traffic in Harringay, Haringey and further afield remains to be seen. Those of us who have been working with the Council on this very much hope that traffic will quickly find other routes. It's fair to say, however, that at very best, we're going to experience some very heavy congestion on Green Lanes for a month or so.
At the same time, the Harringay traffic study will continue. The coincident timing of this piece of work with the bridge closure may be fortunate in that it will give the consultants an opportunity to study the outcome of diverting traffic away from Harringay.

I have complained to David Lammy on Twitter who has asked me to email him with details. The hold up on surrounding roads at the start of the restrictions is beyond ridiculous. It took over an hour just to get through turnpike lights from Mayes rd this morning with cars stuck on residential roads and going round in circles. God forbid a serious emergency happening as there will be no chance of an ambulance getting through. An Iceland delivery was 2 and half hours late last night because of the restrictions and all because the council wants to alleviate traffic building on Burgoine and Duckett rd. 6 months of this is just not doable.

Lucky you, he's blocked me on Twitter because he was embarrassed that I door stepped him when he was campaigning in St Ann's for the dodgily selected candidates.
Anyway.... Which road do you think David will choose to send traffic up towards Wightman from Green Lanes? Is it the voters on Umfreville who will suffer? That seems a bit unfair, what about blocking off that one and seeing if people choose Cavendish? I don't think there are as many Labour voters on Cavendish as there are on Umfreville so that might be OK. Then again, perhaps it's unfair to pick on just one road and we should think more deeply about this before went vent off to our MP on Twitter, something not all of us can do.

David Lammy was the first name that came up on Twitter re the traffic when I hashed Haringey, nothing to do with my political view and I'm not suggesting any rd at this moment in time to suffer the brunt, isn't the final say up to the council if at all. I was merely suggesting people can email their councillors with their views of which there are many who are incensed with the scheme and we only 2 days in. I'm not a resident but have to travel in thankfully only once per day this week( bad enough) but next when my child is back to Muswell hill for sch it will be twice a day with the usual half hour turning into 105 minutes now I cannot see how anybody's time will be manageable. Doctors missed their surgeries yesterday, Iceland delivery slots from 5-7pm took until 9.30 to deliver. The surrounding.roads at the closure points are turning into car parks and cars going round in circles trying to devise a best route through. I don't see why residents of Hornsey, Wood Green , Finsbury should be putting up with the knock on effect of a whole main road closure. I'm in dread of the thought of anyone needing emergency services. The whole scheme needs retweaking.

I live on Palmers Grn/Bounds Grn border Antoinette, my child attends the Catholic sch on Pages Lane(no catchment area). I'm my mums carer so travel into Harringay after sch drop and pick up each day. I got stuck in Hornsey roads today and feel this week is no real test of what we will have to face in the months to come. What usually adds up to 20 odd minutes in even from Muswell will be straight down into the thick of the static traffic. Many residents weren't aware nor their visitors it seems.

Just had a think about this-you have my sympathies & I wonder if this might work? Drive and Drop the kids at pages lane and then head back towards Ally Pally rail station and jump on the train down to look after your mum. I think actually it's possible to park in the Alexandra palace car park which might even be free...someone else could confirm that. Failing that perhaps the council could be prevailed upon to give you a temporary permit for that zone as you're a carer- or..a post to facebook might provide a kindly person willing to get you permits or let you park on their drive. If you are a carer, it may be that you have a disabled permit for your car, in which case you could park wherever you like I guess.

She won't see very much unless her walk extends to Priory Road, Tottenham Lane, Hornsey Park Road and Turnpike Lane.
The Ladder roads seem pretty quiet.

I don't know if she was with these suited folk who did a walk along the road c15.30 -but they saw plenty of what's been mentioned on here - they've just turned round to challenge some workmen who'd moved the bollard so they could get through.
And they'll have seen lots of attempted rat-running such as this three car three point turns...
And maybe people just driving over the bollards...

The reason for the mass synchronised car turning to the north of Whightman/ Warham junction is that there is nothing to let car drivers know that when they turn right onto Wightman Road from Warham they will be limited to accessing a ladder road (Seymour Road) that happens to be going one way in the 'wrong' direction.
There needs to be a sign at the top of Warham saying that traffic must turn left apart for access to the few houses on Wightman to the right.
