Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Don't Forget - Wightman Road Closed for 5 months from Next Tuesday (29th March)
In case it's escaped your notice or slipped your mind, Wightman Road will be closed to through traffic for five months starting next Tuesday 29th March.
This will be a significant dislocation to North London traffic movement. So much so that warning notices have been placed as far away as Archway. No doubt it will also have a significant impact on Harringay's traffic.
However, there really is no alternative to at least partial road closure. The railway bridge between Alroy and Wightman roads is being replaced and there will simply be no road for a few months!
One option the Council could have taken would have been to simply reroute the traffic via the Ladder rung roads. It is to their credit, however, they recognised that with over 16,000 vehicles a day using Wightman Road, this would have placed an intolerable burden on our narrow residential roads, already beset by undue traffic volumes.
After consultation with residents, the solution decided upon is to place blocks at regular intervals along Wightman Road, in effect creating clusters of two or three rung roads. Whilst this will retain unfettered access for residents. it will render the whole Ladder, including Wightman, useless as a rat run. Quite what it will mean for traffic in Harringay, Haringey and further afield remains to be seen. Those of us who have been working with the Council on this very much hope that traffic will quickly find other routes. It's fair to say, however, that at very best, we're going to experience some very heavy congestion on Green Lanes for a month or so.
At the same time, the Harringay traffic study will continue. The coincident timing of this piece of work with the bridge closure may be fortunate in that it will give the consultants an opportunity to study the outcome of diverting traffic away from Harringay.

OK Hugh, I take your point, although I imagine 8000 views doesn't necessarily mean 8000 people - I have 'viewed' several times when there were new posts.
It's disgraceful that there's been no letter drop - they managed to do one about Finsbury Park events last week, and could have combined the drop and saved money! I still think there will be people living in the area who haven't heard about it, as well as 'rat-runners' as you call them.

At Willoughby Rd there is also a good stretch of the pavement up for roadworks on the Duckett's Common side, and with Easter I doubt it will be worked on again until the 29th. Traffic is already having issues with these roadworks, I predict a symphony of car horns on Tuesday morning!

Maddy, at Manor House, on the pavement by the entrance to the park, there's been a big (3m x 2m?) LED message sign cycling through ROAD CLOSED / where / when for at least a week now. Another one at the traffic lights for Hornsey Park Rd traffic to read.

Thanks Hugh. I'm personally looking forward to the reduced traffic and all of it's 'gifts'. It will a be an interesting trade-off between pollution and convenience - an issue which effects so many in a consumer society. Would be great to see how the community feels/reacts before, during and after.
Does anyone know if TFL/researchers/the council are taking advantage of this amazing research opportunity? For instance - how will the closure affect happiness and well-being on the ladder (+/-) or perhaps will there be a significant reduction in air pollution?

Closure of Wightman Road is now 4 days away and still no leaflet drop to Wightman Road residents. Anyone who is not using social media such as HoL is going to get a big shock on Tuesday. Also still no advance notice that the road will be sectioned off and closed on Wightman itself other than at the Turnpike Lane and Endymion junctions. These should be going in along the road. At the very least residents need the map at the head of this post.

One can only hope that the way the council has handled this project and the communication so far is not a reflection of how the entire project will be handled in the coming months because then we could be up for some serious inconvenience and trouble for more than 5 months for sure. How can you not inform and warn the public properly in the weeks leading up to this major traffic displacement?!

Why not print off four copies of the map ( more if you like ) and post them to your immediate neighbours ?

Not a bad idea John but I'm sure I recall being told that Network Rail/Haringey would be doing a letter drop to all addresses in the area. I certainly didn't get one.
