Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Do you know where your surname comes from, or how many people you share it with?

According to this site, my slightly unusual 'maiden name' shows up in East Anglia in 1881, no surprises as that's where I was born and in south and west London which is more surprising. By 1998, the name doesn't even figure as there are less than 100 people in the database. Yikes, we must be a dying breed!

My surname is Anglo Saxon apparently and we have a family tree dating back to the 1650's : ) Mainly in and around Sheffield and North Derbyshire. The map pretty much confirms that, love looking into family heritage.

Thanks for the link Liz.
Hehe....my uncle single handedly turned Warrington & Manchester dark blue.
I love this! Wish I had a British maiden name, I would have spent hours looking at this. I guess I'll wait for the world version to go live. Not so much fun looking at my husband's surname..
My surname's Italian so can't check the website unfortunately.
I guess, like Anette, you will have to wait for the World surname profiler that is promised on the site. My maiden surname has all but died out according to that database and it is a very old English name.
There's still a few of us on Facebook, we've even got our own group!

Not surprisingly Mr E's surname turns up all over North Wales. Common old name!
Interested to know that 97% of Great Britain's surnames are of "higher status" than my own Celtic/Irish/rural specimen.
The fact that in 1998 no mention of my surname occurs throughout the countries of Africa, despite the ten super-prime years I spent there in the 1960's, leaves me somewhat relieved - yet not a little puzzled and disappointed.
There's time yet for them to stop sending emails and register their birth right.
The global profiler is now available and there is a link to it in this post
Teesch! All falling over ourselves to post the same things, eh. I guess that's probably inevitable with so much good stuff being posted.

Interesting to note Liz that as far as I could find the NT site seems to still refer to the World site as imminent rather than actual. I found the world site through a different route.

One thing we must all do is to get better at tagging. I often forget then occasionally have a tagging hour.
Let's tweet at the NT and suggest an update, eh?
