Is there anyone around that lives down Wightman Road being kept awake by the noise from the railway sidings. Last night went all through the night till about 8am this morning with a series of beeping , gravel being tipped and various other sounds. Anyone I can get in touch with as been going on a while now.
cheers

We are being affected by this, nearly drove us mad.
Probably work on new Thameslink Depot and carriage sidings. All I can say is that it will pass!
It's Network Rail's project, on behalf of Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) whose trains will use the new depot. I found a GTR document with a timeline - commissioning the new depot should be in the 3rd quarter of 2016 but I'd expect most of the noisy/heavy outside work like track laying to be finished well before that.
The noises have not kept me awake but I have certainly noticed a lot of unfamiliar noisy activity at night (and at weekends) in recent weeks. The routine train maintenance work that has always gone on at night has mostly been done as quietly as possible and the previous anti-social practice of sounding their hooters at night seems thankfully to be a thing of the past.
I would agree with Glenn that the present noises are almost certainly connected with new construction work for Thameslink and I would hazard a guess that the recent public bollocking accorded Network Rail about failures to deliver big projects on time might have something to do with all night working. It would be most unfortunate if the new Thameslink trains are delivered and ready to run before the new depot is ready for them. Having said all this, I get the impression that, even now, the night work is much less noisy than the day work so perhaps their project managers are doing what they can to keep it down at night.
Indeed it would be unfortunate. New trains are beginning to be delivered, and will initially be stabled and tested at the other new Thameslink depot at Three Bridges (on the way to Brighton) which has just been commissioned. So Network Rail have some breathing space.
PS Although they'll be based at Hornsey depot, they won't be calling at Hornsey (or Harringay) station when they start running in 2017/18 - the platforms aren't long enough.
Nearly bought on Wightman Road - but the proximity to those noisy trains put me off. Went for the ladder instead. Although I can sometimes still hear them!
I'm sorry that this is not useful for you. Here is a potato (attached).
Marc, as a very happy Wightman Road (Railway side) resident of 29 years' standing, sitting and undisturbed sleeping, may I dispel a little of the profound ignorance of your over-sensitive soul or ears?
As for your "Nearly bought on Wightman Road . . . . Went for the ladder instead", if I had a long and heavy ladder handy at the moment I would hurl it with great force in your direction. Wightman Road is, of course, one of two condiciones sine quibus NON for Harringay Ladder. I, Sir, am an upright resident of Harringay Ladder - You are merely a rung crawler. Wightman Road rejoices in your decision to go elsewhere.
Do not dismiss the rungs so flippantly. For we are the very essence of the ladder. Without us you are nothing!
