Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

OK, am I the only muppet in Harringay that has been with Virgin for years and have just been slapped with a notice of a £4 rise in the NY? I am used to a quid here, and a quid there annually, but with RPI at 1.5% this represents something like a 10% rise on my base package costs.

I do start to wonder if I should start being a 'media tart' and start shopping around a bit more. I do for everything else… So, what is stopping me? The hassle of knowing it will not be seamless in the way the relevant authorities have forced banks to make current account and energy transfers? The fact I have programmes recorded and unwatched for 6 months that I really do not want to lose when the box goes back? Hmmm...

What do you all think? I am keen to know if they target who the price rise hits, or if it is a blanket rise across their network?

That does sound over the top!

When you consider I get landline, broadband, free calls to landlines 24/7, free calls to 60 countries landlines 24/7 and 500 minutes to uk mobiles, all for £20..... no tv though... thats all free view or internet.

I've had the same letter, although I also got the same letter last year. I was so horrified when I got the letter last year that I phoned up to complain as I was only 10 months into an 18month contract. Their response was thus 'read the small print of the contract, we can change the contract charges at any time'. In the end they agreed to keep the price that I had agreed to when I initially took out the contract. But now I have just received the letter again... I'm starting to think I made a mistake signing up to Virgin if they are going to make such extraordinary rises each year.

If you can find a fibre optic supplier using the BT physical network then it might be a sufficiently-fast alternative, these days, hence worth shopping around.

Footnote: car insurers [often] do that to their long-time customers, and the same shop-around observation applies to them.

You don't have to leave Virgin to get a more competitive price, Justin, you just have to make them believe you're going to leave. They seem to have tightened up on offering "discounts' as a customer retention tool, but they still do it. It's worth a try.

I got this letter today and am planning to shop around for a better deal. It's one price rise too many and makes me feel like a mug. Basically they rely on you being too lazy/ busy to change providers, which I normally am ( been with virgin for years!). Hopefully however, this letter will push me into affirmative action!

I got the letter today as well. I assumed this was a blanket rise across the network. Be interesting to see if any VM customers have not had this increase. I have been with Virgin for years but have paid my line rental in advance to Sept of next year but will look at other providers as well.

You see, Hugh is right, you need to make the retentions team think you are going to leave, but I have made a schoolboy error in the haggling stakes- I too recently paid my telephone line rental up front and have about 9 month to go. Hence I was curious if only those of us that do this get stung...

I hate receiving my AA renewal, even though the card suggests I have been a member since 1984 (I inherited my Dad's membership). Every year I have to do this dance to call them and get my membership costs down from something close to £200 back to what I paid the previous year. ("the notices are automatically generated").

Banks, utilities, car breakdown, insurance. Man, these guys are parasitic in the way they treat their customers...

I think Liberty Global own Virgin now not Branson.

Virgin are very sneaky. I have also been with them for years. I started off with a really good deal but now they have got me locked into all their services and I am paying much more than I would like to. I did threaten to leave this summer, saying that Sky & BT were offering much better deals. They managed to convince me that it would not work out cheaper in the end because I may not be able to watch through my aerial and unlike Virgin they would charge for an engineer. He did reduce the price a bit but it wasn't a huge discount. I will be really annoyed if I also get told I have an extra £4 a month to pay!!!

Got the same letter today too. Nearly 4 quid a month. Not happy! We also use them for all our mobiles which we have really good deals on. They have always been open to negotiation in the past. Will have to phone them and see.

when did the americans takeover virgin - is that when prices started to rise?

I've been with Virgin for 8 years and every single year I get a letter telling me about price rises and every year I call them up as it is usually at the time my last contract is coming to an end and after having discussed the cost of a similar package with Sky, I inform them I will be moving away from Virgin unless they improve the price of my package.

Every year we come to an agreement and we are both happy. I have the full phone, tv, broadband deal with them.
