Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi guys,

I live on the ladder on a ground floor flat. the water in the kitchen is fine but the shower seems to be affected by the upstairs flat.

i was wondering if anyone else had had this problem and how it was resolved. i think that maybe the shower water comes from upstairs, but... our boiler still makes it hot.... so confused. anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone!

Jamie

Your kitchen should be mains water supplied so won't be affected by whatever the upstairs flat does. Your shower may be coming from a tank in the loft (ours does) and if they share the supply I suppose it gets to them first leaving you with a dribble. Though I've noticed you say that your boiler heats the shower water. Do you have a hot water tank or is it a combi? Also, are you sure that the shower is just using hot water and doesn't have it's own heating element?

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the response. It's a combi in the kitchen and we do have mains water there.

Is there a simple way to check if shower has heating element? it is quite basic - there is no pump, it just comes out....

If upstairs is using laundry/shower, we're toast, so sure something wrong is happening...

time for plumber?

Thanks again!

If the water flow through a combi boiler is too much reduced, the boiler may cut out for several seconds - at least ours does if I turn down the shower flow (or the kitchen hot tap) too far.

So if the upstairs flat runs a tap or shower or starts the washing machine, that may do the same thing to you, temporarily, even if, as likely, you and upstairs have completely separate water systems inside the house.

If there's only one mains water supply to the house it may not be sufficient to supply both flats at peak demand at the same time without significant pressure drop.

Plumber with pressure gauge? Talk to upstairs??

Good luck!

If it's not the bats in the groundfloor, it may be the owls in the loft. Both are known to be bringers of evil and ill luck.
