Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

So I went out to get in my car this afternoon, only to be unable to find it. After phoning the police and then Trace, I discovered that Haringey have removed my car.

I haven't seen pictures yet, but apparently they claim I was on a yellow line. As I'd parked in a bay, I can only imagine that my rear tyre must have been touching the line.

It's going to cost £265 to get the car back, after which we can appeal. My question is: why did they remove the car? It wasn't blocking anything, and I have a permit to park in the bay that I was almost entirely parked in? Why didn't they simply ticket the car?

The obvious answer is that towing brings in more money, but it seems a wholly inappropriate response, given that the car wasn't causing a problem, even if we assume it was on the yellow line.

We'll definitely appeal, but I don't know if arguing that the council's response was inappropriate is sufficient grounds.

Any thoughts?

Sounds very strange. How long had your car been parked for? And what road was it on?

I parked it there last night at around 9.30, and the ticket was issued at 9.25 this morning. In Conway Rd, N15, about 30 yds from my house and in the same controlled parking zone, as far as I'm aware.

We're on Glenwood so hopefully there is not a rogue parking warden on the prowl in our neighbourhood! Really hope you manage to challenge this.

I'm not even sure what the ticket was for now - the chap I spoke to at the car pound told me it was for parking on a yellow line, but the ticket doesn't mention yellow lines. It says 'Parking in a restricted street during prescribed hours' but I have a valid parking permit stuck to the window…

There's a challenge on the way, rest assured.

GOOD LUCK with your appeal!! Really hope you don't have to pay if you didnt do anything wrong. What a frustrating situation to say the least!

Confession time. It appears the car was badly parked, with the rear wheel fully on the yellow line. However, I can't help but feel that towing the car was completely disproportionate to the offence. I think we'll probably launch our challenge on that basis, rather than challenge the PCN (which was fair enough).

I've asked for advice from the link provided by Phil K ( which looks like a very useful site, thanks Phil). I'll see what they suggest...

Appeal.

If it doesn't work, appeal again.

If that doesn't work, appeal again.

Unless the car was blocking the danger it will not have been causing any danger or any significant risk and the penalty is clearly utterly disproportionate in view of how others - like John's entitled Mercedes driver - are indulged.

But if you got a ticket it would have been £50..? versus £265. Presumably they're going to say it was a danger / blocking the road.... argh! And don't forget James' advice about it being fully over the line. Good luck. I shall be parking especially carefully now!

It was definitely fully over the line - I'm definitely at fault parking-wise. I think if you park on a yellow line during prescribed hours the fine is high, hence the £65 (higher than, say, parking in a controlled parking zone without a permit). The other £200 is for releasing the car from the car pound. That's the bit I'm cross about...

It wasn't a danger or blocking the road. There are lots of pictures showing that it wasn't blocking anything. I can't see any reason for towing it except to get £200 out of us.

Ai Caramba ! Now you tell us

*shame-faced over here in the corner*

I still think the towing was out of order, but ya know, I would.

Carol* My advice is to examine the PCN - Any mistake on this 'LEGAL DOCUMENT'  (time/address/name)  can be challenged - After you've seen the evidence consider appealing the tow. hope this helps
