Harringay 2013 - Review of the Year

Last year I wrote a forum based review of the year. This year I'm trying it in glorious magazine format.

It's best to access the magazine directly on the host site. If the regular size is too small, you can also view full screen (via the symbol in the grey bar above the magazine and hit "ESC" to come out of it). You'll need to come out of full screen to see the pages for any links you click.

I haven't worked out all the ins and outs of this online magazine lark yet, but I have noticed that you can order a print copy for some outrageous amount. Feel free to do so, but I haven't set this fee and none of the proceeds will come to HoL.

I'm afraid this version doesn't work for mobile devices as yet (it'll cost me a monthly fee of $40 to enable that feature). So you'll get a rather snitty sounding message if you try and access it via your mobile device*.

I'd welcome any feedback you can offer on this format.

(*If you're desperate to read it on a mobile device, and you have $40 going spare, the solution is simple! Alternatively, the publisher offers a Beta level pdf service. However, it doesn't seem to be working 100% yet. Some text is jumbled and most of the links are missing. But if you just have to view on mobile let me know and I'll get you a low grade pdf)

Thanks Hugh, and for your six years or so of HOL. Your suggestion in the Review of a minute's silence for a Century of Disney seems appropriate. Why not sound The Last (bed)Post as well? What a wasted opportunity by Old Walt's current trio of successors! They could have used the centenary to haul that place into the 20th century for starters. A walk down the road to the Arena might have shown them that potential customers actually like to be able to walk around a shop and see what they might be tempted to spend money on (e.g. Dreams). They might, on the way, notice that even Cots & Beds show a better display sense than Disney. You wouldn't mind, but they have the space and the basic shopfront there to be the best shop in Harringay, or even to resurrect a retro Edwardian emporium, rather than just stuff everything in there like a squatters' kip. If they don't get off their arses, next thing you know we'll have another Dogtas or Arista takeover, or maybe a Romanian or Bulgarian equivalent.

I haven't read the piece yet (still on my phone) but I completely agree. We bought a really nice, attractive, good quality sofa there a couple of years ago. We got great advice and service and all in all a nice experience (even clambering round upstairs amongst piles of furniture was fun).

But...... no one else I have spoken to has even considered going there because of the horrible furniture in the window. It seems such a shame.......

Thanks for doing this Hugh. Though I prefer the on-brand 2012 review to the 'new' magazine format. And though its technically in Finsbury park, the new Park Theatre is a fantastic improvement to the local area and I for one would encourage Harringey online readers to go there in 2014.

Looks great, thanks Hugh. I can't access this from a ipad, I get a message about not being optimised for a mobile device. Is there any way round this?

Sorry, have just reread your post - hadn't assumed an ipad counted as a mobile device!
