Dear Community,
Is anyone else still experiencing nightmares with Haringey's new refuse/recycling collection over one year on? Here on Milton Avenue and the surrounding roads we are still left with excessive, large, wheelie bins on the public footpaths that are overflowing on a weekly basis and being ripped open by vermin. Dealing with Haringey seems to go in one ear and straight out the other. Our local councillors have been very supportive but is seems the real culprit is elected member Cllr Nilgun Canver who as cabinet member for Environment is where the buck stops. Cllr Canver has shown us no support what so ever and has no empathy for our plight much to our dismay. Please let me know if you are dealing with similar issues. I attach a photograph showing crows ripping open bags as an example of our problems.

In my own observations Cllr Nilgun Canver gives no indication of any ability to understand and frame a complex problem; let alone set about trying to find solutions.
Last year she came to one of the Scrutiny Panel meetings, left early, and behaved in such an off-hand way that several panel members sent in formal complaints to the chair, Cllr McNamara.
The people who stand the best chance of solving your problem are - if allowed to do so - the senior Haringey staff working with the senior people from Haringey Veolia. It's them that you - and your own ward councillors - need to persuade. But, having said that, there are problems - and yours may be one of them - which are genuinely very difficult to tackle.

Mmmmm! The new CE Nick Walkley did do a walk around the area and I understand he was appalled at the general degradation but felt at the end of the day it is a member decision. Stephen Mcdonnell, Mick McNicholas and Graham Beattie are all kept in the loop on what is going on but I suspect their hands are somewhat tied. I email the kind of pictures uploaded weekly and more often than not receive no response but the problem is just cleared away which is not really very productive in the long term.

Alan, do you know how many roads have had weekly collections reinstated and where?

Sorry. I've no list of the roads.I just know of a couple in my ward where the system wasn't working properly in blocks of flats - either because the volume of waste overfilled the bins; or a few people persistently put general waste into the recycling bin.
However it would be easy enough for you to request a list - asking the reasons for the variation. I'd suggest using WhatDoTheyKnow.com free website. And posting a link on HoL when you get the information.

We have the same issue. Our refuse bins are full to bursting and we have just under a week before the next collection. We have two bins for 9 separate residences. Our one recycling bin is full to bursting within a few days of collection. It's just not good enough.

Where in the borough are you? Have you contacted your local Councillor, Haringey and Veolia? Unfortunately it seems persistence is the only solution. We have been pushing Haringey to sort out the situation for over a year and there response has been we are monitoring the situation, but a year and half is a long time!

Why not "regenerate" the area? That is the solution to the systemic problems that Haringey's regime seems to think will solve all our problems.

JJ, on 18 July all councillors were invited to a "Leader's Conference" about Tottenham "Regeneration". The meeting gave us - at long last - a peek into the plans for Tottenham being hatched in secret by Arup.
Before the meeting, as I expected, councillors weren't sent anything on paper or by email. The casual contempt shown by the Leadership for non-cabinet councillors and Haringey residents is simply breathtaking.
I've screeds of notes which I'll be posting. Cllr Bob Hare proposed that all the documents should be publicly available - including online - which is even better. If you want to email or phone me I can tell you some more.
Litter and dumping was raised. But by a councillor. And it was acknowledged that clean streets are essential for regeneration. Have you ever noticed how in architects' and developers' pictures of how a street will look in a new development, there are always well-dressed happy smiling people. And not the smallest piece of litter, let alone any litter bins, waste bins, dog turds, or a dumped bag. Never ever will these rose-tinted fantasies include some street drinkers or someone sleeping under a blanket in a shop doorway.
