Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Today's treat from Harringay's High Street: Mexican tacos from Shamata

I really hadn't intended to go for lunch. I was just on a quick errand. There and back in half an hour. Then I spotted something I simply couldn't walk past. Shamata was offering Mexican tacos for their special today.

I'd had the heads up that the chef there had worked in San Francisco, so five minutes later I was settled comfortably with a large cappuccino in front of me, testing out the free wi-fi and awaiting my taco.

I was not disappointed. Freshly cooked ground beef, home-made guacamole. I took a bite and thought of California.

The taco came with a side order of tomato rice but the two tacos alone were more than enough to fill me up.

This is a lovely relaxed cafe. I chatted with the chef's sister, who is very proud of her sister's food as she should be, who explained that everything is made fresh, all the cakes are made by her sister from fresh, organic ingredients and that she is keen to try new things to tempt people's palate. Alongside the more 'traditional' Turkish offerings I spotted breakfast burritos, home-made granola, huge plates of pasta and wonderful looking cakes and dessert all made in-house. This is a slice of Californian cafe life (on which I'm something of an expert  ) right on the Lanes.

Seriously, this place is a little gem. As I finished my Turkish tea gazing out at the world going by, I was already planning my next trip with the family in tow. When my husband spots that rice pudding there'll be no stopping him.

Yes, indeed - glad you went. As we discussed, Melda, Ibrahim's sister, is a cordon bleu chef on an extended (maybe permanent) visit from San Francisco - everything in the store from the bread up is home made. Shamata is well worth a visit.

I shall be doing my best to make her stay with my continued patronage of her fine establishment

Thank you. It's amazing what's tucked down our high street, that we walk past everyday and don't always see! Shall def give them a visit, food looks wonderful.

You seem to be mapping our high street single handedly Liz!

It would be good to have all this information in one place on an actual map...Where is Shamata? I can't see it on the regeneration map...what's the main theme apart from the specials?

I know, tough job eh?

We did do some mapping onto social media networks. Hugh has done some sterling work on Foursquare and we have guides on Qype too (which could do with a bit of an update perhaps?). Hugh also has lots of local info pages under the 'local info' tab at the top of the page too including businesses that operate out of Harringay.

Shamata is at the bridge end of the High street opposite Antipliler and next to Hot Nuts about here (although Google Street View is obviously well out of date). Its menu is modern, lots of Turkish with some US dishes and everything is made fresh by the chef.

Yes, as well as our Foursquare page, as a 4Sq superuser I've made sure as many Harringay businesses as possible are on there. Rather than create a data set for someone else to exploit commercially, I'd rather create one for the community on HoL - it's just the time - if anyone has time let me know. We'll do one, never mind helping a commercial set up to make money - done that already with Foursquare.

A local business map is long overdue. Grand Parade is but a blur of so many shops that's it is tricky at times to notice anything distinctive or new. Have the traders assoc not produced something? Maybe Rob would know someone who could produce this for HOL.

There is a directory of sports on Harringay Traders' Website. I'll do it - just give me a wee bit of time and let's allow this conversation to return to its original purpose.

Is that a taco in a flour tortilla?

Yes it did come in a tortilla.

Proper, i.e. Mexican as opposed to Tex-Mex, tacos do, or so I found when I was in Mexico.

Today's special  was chicken quesadillas, and the good news is that Melda is planning to put her tacos and quesadillas on the menu rather than just offering them as specials. *does a little dance to mariachi music*
