Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have again asked for some enforcement action by the council against HGVs using Wightman Road and the ladder roads.

I am pleased to say that I have just had an email from the Parking Infrastructure Manager to say that they will be carrying out some enforcement this week between 7am and 8.30am.

Lets hope it starts to send a message to the companies that they lorries belong to.

Yes we have the same problem on mattison road as well.

Justin, it is the other humps as well.  We're just on the "down" side of a hump and the whole house shakes when the trucks more or less take off over the humps and then land right outside our house (this sounds like an exaggeration, but it really isn't - you can see the dents in the road where they come off the humps).

Yes - we have the Veolia problem on Burgoyne as well. Including in the middle of the night, which often wakes our household up, as it is like an earthquake.... Speedhumps aren't a huge deterrent to the big trucks it seems - I guess the drivers know they won't be picking up the tab for any damage to the vehicle!

Yep it wakes our household up on Burgoyne too! Not so fun with a small baby...

Congratulations Karen.

What is the system in Mattison Road? Sounds interesting!

Thanks for all the input to this thread, I am continuing to collate everyones thoughts and continue to liaise with the council about how best to resolve (at at least reduce) the problem.

At the risk of being boring, I have said previously that some sort of physical width restrictor (like the one outside Woodlands nursery) would work, like this and this. Sorry they are the best images I can find on tint'ernet. The one outside Woodlands sure as heck has me slowing down for fear of tearing a gaping hole in my car!

I agree - the action is 2 fold - reduce the lorries, but also change the speed humps.

I know the council wrote to say huge lorries crashing up and down over speed humps does not cause damage to houses, but we are surely entitled to some protection from the noise and vibration it causes.

I am not sure how far we can go with removing the speed humps. If you check my earlier posts, I took the council to the LGO about the humps, but I lost the complaint in favour of the council. I published the report as well.

I am an HGV driver.

I live in the area and hear the HGV's that travel down my road as short cut to avoid A406 tailbacks (early in morn especially).

I therefore avoid using any area where I will cause unnecessary noise. I avoid 7.5 restrictions as I know the high risk of getting a fine. I have had a few in the past and not all have been my fault but I have had to pay.

If I drive down a ladder road to deliver I am ok but I can get a ticket for my route out via wightman !

The company I work for does not help if I get a fine they leave it to me. So think on-be more reallistic on this.  the companies do not get the message.  And as for Karen's suggestion re talking through the middleman to the businesses re their delivery drivers - your louder voice becomes a whisper that far down the line.

Message - help the drivers a bit more and they won't have to duck and dive so much !  They are not an enemy but doing a job needed to sustain business.

John

John, your comment about not treating HGV drivers as "the enemy" rang true to me. So I'm curious about your view of an issue I've raised in the past as a councillor.

In Tottenham Hale there are some extremely narrow roads and Heavy Goods Vehicle drivers sometimes look for "back-doubles", only to find themselves stuck down a heavily parked residential street with some tricky turns. Residents have complained that HGVs have damaged their parked cars.

My suggestion to Haringey Highways staff was to have a few advisory notices for HGV drivers at the entrance to the side roads with the worst problems. My reasoning is that drivers don't deliberately drive down an unsuitable route. Nor do they welcome losing time by getting jammed in a back street.

Our Highways staff dismissed my suggestion on the basis that HGV drivers would ignore advisory notices. In other words, that "self-policing" wouldn't work and that it would need enforcement by Haringey staff. And we don't have enough of those.

Any thoughts?

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)
