Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've just seen two heavily laden Jewsons lorries driving down Burgoyne Road at 750am.

I understood that these lorries weren't meant to come down the Ladder streets, due to the weight they carry, and the impact on the judder bars and houses (does anyone else's house shake when they go past?)

I recall a forum about this a while ago, but if anyone has any ideas about who to complain directly to in the Council, please let me know.

Thanks!

You can complain and you'll get an OBE if you can get any action!

No one monitors the speed or lorry restrictions. John McMullan apparently had some success with complaining direct to the companies concerned. That would be my best bet.

You could also write to your councillors and see if you can get them to take any action.

Finally you could raise it with Zena Brabazon (same link as above) who has just taken over as chair for the Harringay & St Ann's Area Assembly.

Do come back and let us know how you get on.

Yes, the only thing that could work is complaining to the company. They will probably say that they have a right to go down Burgoyne under the "access" provision of the 7.5t limit.
You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar...

I was in Moka for lunch recently and my anxiety levels were going through the roof at the amount of VERY big HGV traffic going down Wightman that should not have been (I do need to get over that). I noticed the Jewson lorry and wondered if they have a new and bigger one?

I was stood by one of the raised beds on Pemberton the other day. I saw a stream of heavy lorries going down (a lot delivering to Yashar at the bottom of the road). Most seemed ok, but I noticed that one went over the raised part of the crossing and as the back end came off the ground fair shook. I think it seems to be the speed at which they back end (with the weight over it) literally drops off the raised bit that does the damage.

If we could get these muppets to go a bit slower it would make a massive differnce I reckon.

The shortest route out of the restricted zone is down Burgoyne and the 'Except for Access' exception would seem to apply.  Coincidentally I have just received this reply from John McQueen at the Council:

Thank you for your email regarding the weight restriction on Wightoman Road railway bridge.

The bridge weight restriction is located within a 7.5t restriction zone that covers the majority of the Ladder roads. I can confirm that we are currenlty upgrading the signage in the area. The upgrade is almost complete with 2 signs waiting to be replaced; these are expected to be completed by the end of this week and once complete will ensure the zone is compliant and that the Council can successfully enforce the restriction.

Once the zone is compliant we will commence 7.5t enforcement in the area.

I hope the above information is helpful and thank you once again for taking the time to write in.

Wow, they're actually going to enforce! Good greif. Did you ask him how that enforcement will happen?

I have always found John McQueen to be measured and sensible so I take the commitment over enforcement seriously. The previous Ward Sergeant did much work in the background on getting agreement on how to enforce with the 'Except for Access' exception in place. Signage became a sticking point, the Council wanting to avoid a yellow box junction type fiasco. Enforcement is sub-contracted - the Smart cars with a periscope looking camera - as video evidence is needed apparently. Powers of enforcement are with the Council but Council officers do not have powers to stop a vehicle so the 'I needed access' plea is difficult to overcome. I assume the intention is to have all the signs in place to avoid the 'I didn't know', to capture video evidence of the offence and to issue a penalty subject to an appeal based on paperwork demonstrating the need for access. The latter would not apply to overweight vehicles using the Wightman Road bridge as the restriction has no exception.

I've no reason to doubt that John's a good man, Paul.

For the avoidance of doubt, let me be clear; my comment wasn't about John McQueen, rather it was about a situation that has gone on unchecked for at least a decade, probably more.

Not only has it gone unchecked for more than a decade but sometimes the worst offenders are the council themselves. You are right to be cynical Hugh.

That is amazing! I will also write to John McQueen as it sounds like he's the guy to write to. The big issue, I think, is the speed at which they go down the roads. The whole house shakes when they come over the speed bumps (we're quite close to one).

I will also write to Jewsons. I appreciate they are a business, and need to use the road to get to Green Lanes, but if its not lawful, its not lawful!

Thanks guys. I'm keen to do something about it, as i've just spent a small fortune plastering over all the cracks in the house that cannot be caused just by the weather, or normal movement of the ladder houses. The shaking that goes on when these lorries go down the road has got to be a contributing factor.

I also see that the council had an engineer in to certify that the lorries aren't causing damage - does anyone have a copy of that report? I'd be interested to read it.

Thanks for flagging this up again.  I too will add my voice and email John McQueen.  Good idea to keep Cllr Brabazon, as new chair of the Area Committee informed too.

"I also see that the council had an engineer in to certify that the lorries aren't causing damage - does anyone have a copy of that report?" - where did you see this? There needs to be an independent investigation. I don't trust the council as far as I can throw them over those speed humps.
