I'm at home a lot, so I get the usual Hello, "we're offering you blah, blah blah" which I either just hang up on or sometimes string along a bit, just for the hell of it.
However, here's a new type that I think could trap an unwary person because I didn't twig for a minute.
Man rings up and asks for my hubby, by name, saying he's from bank A (where we have a mortgage). I tell him to ring back later to talk to him. He says its about *my* debit card and an ATM transaction on it. I don't have a debit card with that bank, I reply. Yes, he says, your Bank B card, I mean. Er no, I don't have a card with them either. Yes, yes, your bank C card, he continues. I don't have a card with bank C, I reply. After 3 strikes, the phone goes dead.
I suppose if he'd got it right, he might have then asked for bank details 'to check' the transaction.
Be careful out there folks. I'm guessing he won't ring back but just to let you know and be on your guard (as I almost wasn't).

When I get a phone call from a bank, I never answer any of the caller's questions beyond confirming who I am if they have my name. I ask for a reference number and terminate the conversation, explaining that I will ring the bank using contact details from my own address book.
It's a b**dy nuisance, but this procedure is the only way to be certain we are talking to the people who are who they say they are.
