"Dusty Knuckle’s two bakeries, cafe and baking school employ 120 local people, with a focus on at-risk young people".
It is a great pity that Dusty Knuckle had to suffer in this way. In my view, the arrival of this establishment in Harringay was a welcome addition to our neighbourhood which could certainly do with more variety. I suppose it is evidence of the rising popularity of our area among young professionals and this is partly explained by the fact that houses on either side of Green Lanes in Harringay are more affordable than in some more fashionable parts of London. Personally, I don’t regret the way our local population is evolving and I am not sure that “gentrification” is a useful term for the consequences of it in the services and shops we see. In any event, Dusty Knuckle is not the cause, although it may be a consequence. It is hard not to notice that some of our local terraced houses are poorly maintained and/or shoddily converted and I very much welcome the noticeably high quality work that has improved the appearance of many houses in recent years. I am guessing that the interiors are also getting better. If that is gentrification, then bring it on say I and while we are about it let’s have more new businesses as good as Dusty Knuckle and close all the betting shops.
Exactly Dick. I don’t see people outside bakeries looking desperate after losing a week’s wages on their sourdough bread addiction.
Thanks for sharing the article, I had missed it. I can’t believe people target a great, honest business with a genuinely strong ethos. Really upsetting reading.
We do not buy from them very often just because they are a bit further away from us, and they are quite expensive, but I have only respect for their business and will go down to buy a loaf today and show my support.
If there were any initiatives arranged by anyone to show the community’s support in a more joined up way, please share!
