Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This fellow was showing its slightly tattered wings on a Cox's Orange Pippin in my garden this afternoon. According to my book, it is a speckled wood butterfly and I don't recall ever seeing one before.

What a beauty (and the apple Dick)

It is a Speckled Wood and as it's name suggests it is fond of partial shade and dappled woodland. Looks like a local bird has had a go at it but they are tough little thing. It prefers the honeydew of the leaves in the woods. We have a fair few of them at Railway Fields (here's one I photographed in July) and it has a growing population after some years of decline. It's a beautiful butterfly

I've had this one all week
