Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Another attempted rape - in Mattison Road early this morning
This happened near to my daughter's flat - she heard the victim's screams - a 20 year old girl coming back from a night out - at 7 a.m this morning. Police have ticker-taped the area.

I'd agree with the "arguably" John but not anything else.
I know that fear of crime is often disproportionate to crime levels, that we don't want people cowering at home in terror of things that are unlikely to happen etc - but this is a case that involves two very local attacks on women in the early hours and I think people should be aware of them so that they can make their own judgements about how they go about their day to day lives.
What is the alternative? Let's not tell anyone about anything that happens in their area? Really?

I am happy for people to think it's safe, just not happy for them to tell others that "it is not safe" on such a public forum.

I think we were just about able to turn a blind eye to wtf but, to be honest Bob, the word beginning with 'w' that you have addressed to John is not acceptable according to our Terms of Service, section 2.
Please can you ensure that you express your frustrations with another person's point of view in less inflammatory terms.
Furthermore, this discussion should not descend into fruitless arguments between individuals, but remain as a source of information for people worried about a serious crime committed in the area. The safety of the Harringay Passage is irrelevant to this thread, as the crime did not take place there. All further references in this thread are liable to be deleted.

I do take your point that the more the passageway is used the safer it is. However, the only mugging I have witnessed in over 25 years in Harringay was in the passageway, after dark. The victim was a woman. I have no way of knowing why those 2 young men attacked in the middle of the passageway, but I would guess it is because the passageway is not overlooked, and even if someone enters the passageway at one end - the attackers will have a clear view of that and a good chance to getaway in the other direction- as they did.
I have hesitated to say this as I also don't want to spread fear - this was some years ago and happened once! - but you do have to engage with reality.

Absolutely agree, It is a bit of a cliche I know, but knowledge is power, and I think the question should not be if the message is put accross, but how, so as not to instill a sense of panic in the local community and beyond.

Yes see previous part of this long discussion on Women not being encouraged 2 stay indoors and see Reclaim the Night website. This is a man sexually assaulting women who may strike again. Unfortunately women have always 2 b hyper vigilant anywhere they go which is dark or v few people about. These attacks happened, not inHarringay. passage but in two local streets in the early hours of morning. So if u coming back from a club night out have your alarm on keyring, phone a friend and keep aN eye out. Don't let alcohol cloud your awareness. Stay safe girls.
