Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Admins, I think racism is not allowed on HOL. Is there any chance you could ban the people I believe are making racist comments on today's Downhills Park post.

I have taken a screen shot and will be reporting them to the police.

Can you link to the post you’re concerned about please.

Oh come on.... this is the last ACCEPTABLE form of racism. If we ban being racist about travellers we'll have to stop people hating on cyclists, then where would we be? Don't tell me you'd be taking screen shots of anyone who said that cyclists always jump red lights.

Hahahahaha I totally forgot about the acceptable racism, no one wonder Gordon Gekko was going to give out jobs like tiki torches in south carolina. Screen shots can't be deleted by the original poster. It's just the racism I don't like, cycling ain't the my thing and certainly not wasting my phone battery for...

The following comment has been deleted since it is not permitted by our house rules:

I've edited your Posts POTUS, to anonymise the objects or your ire. Whilst I may share your absolute rejection of anything that might be construed as hate speech, I don't want to subject any individual members to a public shaming on HoL.

There are other comments which remain with which I profoundly disagree, but they have been left to allow people such as yourself to refute them.

Any member who repeatedly breaks any house rules will be banned.

Thanks admin. I hope the people in question feel very ashamed and a just little bit ostracised...

Unfortunately there are people who feel no shame at holding and spreading rascist views and they seem to feel more emboldened in doing so. They need challenging at every turn and thanks for doing so.

You're welcome Maggie. Us civilised folk need to shout more.
Having read the post concerned I have to concur. We do need another term than racist though. Travellers are not a race in any sense. Neither are Jews so we say anti semitism. They are a recognised ethnic group however. Irish travellers that is .

'Travellers are not a race in any sense.'

I would agree with this - but the problem is what is a 'race'? It is a term that makes no sense, other than 'human race' perhaps.

The etymology of the term Antisemitism is interesting. It was of course German speakers criticising people speaking out against the Jews in Germany (hence the compound word) who first coined it.

I like that you can call someone being a racist, a racist. It has quite a homely ring of utter disapproval to it and delivers a short sharp shock. When I see someone being accused of Antisemitism (which admittedly is in newspapers) it tends to be more subtle.

There is also government disapproval that hit travellers harder than other groups because they have no fixed address and so are harder to tax properly.

I copied this Philip

What is Racism?
Racism is a belief that one group of people is superior to another. It accounts for people believing that differences in character or ability are due to someone’s ethnicity. It can manifest itself in both individual and institutional forms. Individual racism is often easier to establish.

Individual Racism
At a simple level, individual racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different ethnicity based on the belief that one’s own ethnicity is superior. For individual acts of anti-Traveller racism, examples would be:

Denying Travellers access to a pub or shop,On-line hate-speech,Physical or emotional abuse based on someone’s identityTraveller children being bullied in schools,Travellers not being called for interview for jobs based on their addressNon-Travellers campaigning against sites being built in their locality

Individual racism can, in theory, be challenged by legal means, for example by the Equal Status Act (see below)
