A Hundred MYLES

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 23:48 5 Comments

While the literary poseurs reading public of Stroud and Ladder are reinventing the Public Library with cupcakes and Edwardian teas on Wednesday, October 5th, I shall of course be re-reading all the oeuvres of Brian O'Nolan / Brían Ó Nualláin / Flann O'Brien / Myles na gCopaleen / Myles na Gopaleen / Brother Barnabas / George Knowall who celebrates his/their hundreth birthday on that very day. I trust that the conjoined Librarians…

Giuseppe Conlon House, Harringay : Catholic Workers' House of Justice, House of Hospitality.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 20:30 7 Comments

I'm sure all of HOL will be outraged to read in today's issue of the Catholic weekly, The Tablet, that our friends in the 'London Catholic Workers' opened their new House of Hospitality in Tottenham last Sunday.

"Tottenham!" I hear you shriek in unison. "Didn't our London Catholic Workers move into their new Hospitality house at St Augustine's Church on Mattison Road, HARRINGAY only a few months ago? Have they moved east and upmarket already?"

Black Fatherhood, Apple Pie & Our Neighbourhood Schools

Posted on March 15, 2010 at 0:45 15 Comments

You must excuse my title (I've been an avid TIME Magazine junkie since I worked with the Peace Corps and other draft dodgers in West Africa in the '60s and sometimes its style and values rub off on me) but, dammit, there are some things we must all stand up for and support - like fatherhood and apple pie (even or especially on Mothering Sunday) and our Neighbourhood Schools. David Lammy champions at least two of these three.

David Lammy's a dear friend of mine. Or am…

Finsbury Park Community Allotments - well, why not?

Posted on January 15, 2010 at 15:52 5 Comments

If LBH Community & Leisure (Parks and Open Spaces) have come to the conclusion that some areas of Finsbury Park are underused, indeed underachieving, there must be better ways of making them more productive, even co-productive, in the interests of the community's leisure and wellbeing than by flogging them off to some commercial concern for private profit and some incidental Borough revenue. A fraction of 1% extra on Council Tax (for Parks and Open Spaces) would do more for their revenue… Back to Harringay Online

Dear OAE,
Your kind invitation to re-visit Harringay and to sip a cup of Earl Grey (or stronger) is so typical of the warmth I have always felt coming to me from members of HoL. But I fear such a trip is most unlikely.
Did you know that I live in Warwickshire? And at 88 next birthday I view the prospect of such a journey with apprehension. I could no longer drive that distance and would need to use train, Underground etc, with all the associated hassle.
Moreover, I am the full-time carer of my wife, who is confined to an electric wheelchair. And even if I could find suitable cover for one day, I would surely need to stay overnight. And thus the complications increase.
I also have to tell you that she and I are very low at present. Two days ago our elder daughter died suddenly in her sleep, aged 59. Our surviving daughter is a tower of strength, as are our grandchildren, and I feel certain you will understand our position without my needing to go into further detail.
I suppose we will eventually emerge from this awful darkness, but ..............
It was good of you to allow me to write privately for, as you will also understand, none of the above has any place in the general pages of HoL.
Thank you again,
Arthur

I'm really sorry Eddie, I know we talked about Tuesday but then when I confirmed with Mrs McM found that I'd have to move it to Wednesday. I changed the HoL event but did not tell you, completely my fault. Very sorry. See you tomorrow night.

I've tried to snap a few pictures of the bus I have in mind. I see it down Wightman Rd sometimes and it's a TfL mobility/dial-a-ride bus - nice and red too. It is narrower than the W5 and a current user of Wightman Rd so that should be no problem.

The route, required frequency and "stops" need to be thought about but I guess we should just get the ball rolling with a proposal. I was thinking about the Harringay Heartlands secondary school as well... I think those kids will be walking from Hornsey Park Rd or Turnpike Lane.

re "...outside Yasar Halim, where all the old folk seem to run into the road."
Shouldn't the old fools be confined to their homes, or preferably to a Generalised Old Folks' Home? Bloody lemmings!

I couldn't wait to see your response to that comment. I wasn't disappointed.

Hope you are feeling okay and that you'll be able to make it to the traffic meeting on the 23rd.

Dear OAE,
I have sent the 10 pages, covering my years 1923 to 1933 in 257 Wightman Rd to Hugh and he seems pleased. He may use some of it. As regards your kind suggestion that I post something (a general toe-in-the-water enquiry) on the Main page, hoping to attract the interest of the present occupants of No 257, I'm not sure how to do that. If and when you have time, could you give me a lead?
Best wishes,
Arthur Astrop

Dear OAE,
How kind of you to respond to my piece on Wightman Rd etc in the period 1923 - 1933. And to be so complimentary as well! I have been astonished at the interest shown by a few who read it first on the Francis Frith website, then Hugh's response, and now yourself. I must confess to still being somewhat bewildered by the 'customs' of blogging, not least of course, because of my rather advanced age.
The recent flurry of postings, however, has just reminded me that some years ago I wrote a fairly detailed account of my early life in the form of a long 'Letter to my Grandchildren'. (and now to my great-grands as well). My reasoning was that almost certainly (like me) they would eventually come deeply to regret not having asked g'pa and g'ma enough questions when they were still alive. So I wrote it down for them.
The first dozen or so pages of that 'letter' deal with my life and impresssions in the years 1923-1933, almost all of them at 257 Wightman Rd. I cannot imagine these recollections of life in north London then would be of much interest to anyone in the 21st century, but they do exist..
If you, or Hugh, want to read those pages then I don't know how to get them to you! My instinct is to photo-copy them and send them by post. If they are of any use, you could then edit them and include them on the site. I really don't know.
With best wishes,
Arthur Astrop
