Certainly is. My Grandma was a keen gardener, we also had an abundance of fruit trees and vegetables in the garden.

I have many memories of growing up in Harringay in the 1950s. It’s lovely to share them with other people. My Uncle who is photographed in the front garden was the projectionist at the Ritz Cinema Turnpike Lane from the time of it opening until he died. Not sure if Turnpike Lane is classed as Harringay but I have a couple of photos to share.

Thank you for sharing them.

Turnpike Lane is on the borders of Harringay and we have an album of images for it. We also have a few images on the Ritz (Click "View Full size" under the photos to enlarge),

Whilst the focus is Harringay, the interest is more 'local'. You can see the range of history photo albums here

Hi Caroline,

I previously worked in the Ritz Cinema, when it was called Coronet Cinema. I knew the projectionist well. This was in  the mid 90's. 1995-1997.

Was your uncle working as the projectionist at Coronet Cinema?

Sadly not the one you knew. My Uncle started working at the Ritz Cinema when it opened in the late 1930 s. He worked there until he died in the early 1960 s.

He really enjoyed working there and during the 25 years he worked there must have shown and seen many films there.

Hi Caroline,

I can certainly understand his feelings, I enjoyed working there also. I was always fascinated with its decor, and could not quite understand why the decor seemed so retro.

It was only years later through this forum that I found out this Cinema was actually built in the 1930's. I was born in the late 70's, and grew up in Wood-Green, and always new it as either ABC, Cannon, then Coronet.

Thanks for your little piece of history. It is always nice the read about stories about the town and its people.

Merry Christmas.

Wow what a garden.   I had a friend living in similar row of houses, maybe nearer to Park Road, opposite Beresford/Effingham Road area ?  Large houses with gardens to match.

I was born and lived in Harringay Road from 1949 - 70.  Great happy memories.

I remember Harringay Road very well, I used to cross it in the 1950 s to go to West Green School. I remember it was quite a busy road.

I lived at 630 Green Lanes between Harringay Gardens and Park Road.

As you say the garden was lovely, with fruit trees probably planted soon after the house was built in about 1905.

Ah, I can now place location of your house.

My older Brother went to West Green School.  My family were living in Stanley Road at that time.

Just had another look at that beautiful garden........so tranquil.

Do you still live around the area ?

I might remember your brother, I was born in 1951, and certainly remember Stanley Road. Do you remember the Aldridge family who lived at number 29 I think ?

I moved from Green Lanes in 1965 to Freezywater near Waltham Cross. I got married in 1971 and lived in Bush Hill Park for 3 years before moving to Peterborough in 1974. I have now lived in the same house in Peterborough for nearly 48 years.

The house in Green Lanes was shared occupancy, but only by family members so we were able to be flexible with space and use of garden. I think the family moved in just after the war and my Uncle and Grandmother purchased it between them. It probably cost under a thousand pounds at the time. The view from the two attic bedrooms of the house was amazing.

I have lovely memories of living in Green Lanes. The house I lived in along with the house next door are now the Cypriot Community Centre and sadly the garden Is now used for parking cars both front and back.
