Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Well played, Clive! Your relentless posting about the shortcomings of the local Labour party have borne fruit and played no small part in the downfall of Peray Ahmed, Emine Ibrahim and Seema Chandwani amongst others.

Put the bottle down Eric.

It seems reports of Miss Chandwani's defenestration were exaggerated. Must try harder, Clive!

ERIC, thanks for noting my postings, but any congratulations should go to the winners, plus gratitude to all those who participated in the democratic process.

Thanks are also due to the council staff who manned the polling stations. In the school in Stapleton Hall Road, Stroud Green, the cheerful staff told me they were not on a shift, but were to work from seven through to 10 PM—probably typical of all Stations. The election and the organisation of the council's website was effective and efficient.

I have not always posted in support of the previous captain and crew of HMS Haringey. Although I have pointed out some shortcomings of that crew, only a tiny fraction of the electorate sees and reads HoL.

Labour in government tends not to be good  for Labour councils. The "downfall" of local Labour was IMO due to national issues. i.e. the unpopularity of Labour PM, rather than the electorate recognising the shortcomings of local Labour, which has been years overdue.

Our electoral system of winner-takes-all means that candidates of any and all Parties can slog their guts out for weeks on end … and achieve absolutely nothing. I favour proportional representation, where all votes have equal value.

The final result is published here.

It bears out the earlier prediction of no overall control, but only by a whisker:

29 = Non-Green Party Councillors

28 = Green Party, biggest single Party

I hope that successful and unsuccessful candidates of other Parties will help the Green Council to be the best in can be, in the interests of us residents.

In the next four years there are likely be defections, deaths and resignations, but nowhere near enough to dull the Green Group. I doubt there will be a coalition between Labour and Liberal Democrats, but voting at Full Council will be … interesting!

I understand that the Green Party will elect their leader next week. That Party's ultimate goal should be, to be so effective, that they are re-elected beyond the next General Election in 2030.
