There is no connection, I'm afraid There was a general policy as part of civil defence precautions, to protect transport infrastructure and wooden signal boxes were identified as offering little protection to the equipment under the operating floor. There seemed little such concern showed for the operator, but it was an essential part of the job to have a clear view of the passing traffic, to spot the oil lit tail lamps for example. Still, the signalman was issued with a steel helmet to wear during air raids!

Confession time. We all called it the Hogs Back but no idea why really. I walked it home most days from Stationers and we would scramble down to the railway line and get our pennies chopped in half by the passing shunters.

And my late oldest brother and his chums once spread-eagled a largely unclad boy in full view of he Scotsman at about 4.10 p.m. as it headed out of King's Cross.

The down Flying Scotsman has always departed from The Cross at 10am, so it must have been the passengers of another east coast express who were entertained by your brother and his chums.

As a very small child I remember Dad pushing me in my red pushchair to sit on the walkway Overlooking the rail tracks. I can remember the Flying Scotsman steaming through.

We spent many a day and evening train spotting from that view on the hogs back .Would have been around 1958- early 60,s .What good memories.
