Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As promised (after a few beers) and a discussion about cyclist behaviour, a video of two random days cycling to the west end and the cyclists that insist on running red lights. Whether you think this is acceptable is up to you, but it isn’t to me.

This is what I see every day on my route and has become an acceptable part of two wheeled travel it seems.

As much as I expect excuses from the usual gang for this behaviour : ) I am posting this as proof of my everyday experiences, which may or may not be universal in London

Great music by Judas Priest by the way!

Scary B2, when you see them cutting a swathe at speed through people crossing.
Thanks for that.

Just to be fair can we now have a propaganda video from bike side of the argument.. ?

I presume that because there are more cars on the road than bikes , that by the the law of averages more cars/vans/lorries & buses! than bikes jump red lights ..

There is no such thing as the law of averages :-)

And if there, were bikes would have to be subject to the same constraints as cars/vans etc. for a comparison to be valid ie, bikes would have to have number plates

Why wasn't I surprised by your comment? - 'this holier than thou' stance does become very wearing though..

This is a bike propaganda video Stephen. I am a cyclist! I'm not saying that many cyclists don’t adhere*, I am making a point that was made to me a while back that it was a sever minority, which is not true from my experiences*.

If you are correct with the law of averages I haven't seen the other modes of transport jumping the light to the extent that cyclists do* – probably because they don’t*. Maybe someone from the “Middle Class, Weekend, Charcoal Grey, (not pure black anarchists) Flag Waving, Two Wheeled, Anarchist Movement” could shed some light on this and make a video – but you can’t use Judas Priest as your music you have to pick another dandy tune.

* Purely my experiences of riding for five years into various parts of central London.

Well look at the video - there are a number of bikes going through red lights. Are there any cars/vans etc doing it ? There's your answer.

Having checked again - one, maybe two.

I do not agree with jumping ANY red light as a cyclist. Even Boris's plan takes something from pedestrians but gives them nothing.

However, this video has "cherrypicked". The two longest sequences show cyclists jumping red lights across a T intersection where traffic is joining a main road via traffic lights. I think they just feel VERY safe doing this and certainly motorists expect me to just move over when they're not controlled by lights and I'm the only thing they have to give way to.

Ahh John I knew I could count on you for somehow justifying it or ‘cherry-picking’ as you put it, well done dude. I’ll buy that man a bottle of Mann’s Pale Ale.

I can honestly tell you I picked these places at random and I can also honestly say there were about four sequences of video where no-one jumped the lights – only four mind, but the nature of the video was to prove to some, “head in sand” folk that this occurs far more than the “17% statistic”

If every road user ‘cherrypicked’ the laws and traffic lights they wanted to adhere to, it would be carnage, the difference is cyclists are in the main anonymous and blab that it’s safer to break the law, rhubarb! It’s down to good old fashioned human selfishness and being impatient. If drivers/riders of cars, lorrys and motorcycles think they could get away with it, they would but they are held more accountable as they are traceable via, witnesses and traffic cameras.
