Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Finsbury Park Carnival ran on 26th August between 1978 and 1981.

Organised by Pastor Robert Morris of Pastor Morris's Advice Centre in 1978, the idea was apparently to take the pressure off the rising numbers at the Notting Hill Carnival. However, it seems that the Finsbury Park Carnival was contentious from the first. It was described as a 'police carnival' by the Black Youth Movement who accused the pastor of accepting huge sums of money to encourage the displacement of black youth from Notting Hill.

Boycotted by the very people it was targetting, the carnival had a limited life and failed to achieve its objectives.

Doing a quick bit of research for this description, I found an events listing in a 1998 copy of the Independent newspaper showing that the carnival ran again in 1998. Whether it was a one-off rebirth, I do not know.

I contend that Carnival need to spread out from Notting Hill into a London wide eent where people can let loose and get rid of thier stress.

The English have no day when they collectively are allowed to let off steam without the police controling every aspect of the party and caging people in as happens now at Notting Hill.

Yes I am a bit older now but it is a reason for not going to Notting Hill. Can't do this. Can't cross here go that way. This entrance is closed. Keep ropes around your band.

It is just  more stress than it is worth.

Fête de la Musique....anyone allowed to set up and make musique/noise until midnight. Anywhere. It is great and nationwide and free!
