Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Wood Green Trolleybus Depot, c1960
Trolley buses ran out of Wood Green until November 1961. This image shows that to the right of the garage, the old Three Jolly Butchers had already been demolished and replaced with what looks like an Ashley House just being completed. There's a view, possibly from the top of Ashley house in 1968 here. To the left of the garage is Caroba House, the old Cakebread & Robey Building.

I’m pretty certain the Jolly Butchers was still open and operational in 1975. I know this as my husband imbibed a few pints in there prior to our wedding at Wood Green Civic Centre, in September 1975. Maybe this was some sort of renovation project. From memory, the Jolly Butchers was further up the hill from the bus garage, unless my memory is not serving as well as it used to!

What’s now the Monaghan Arms (occupying the north east corner of Ashfield House) traded as the Jolly Butcher for a while. Could it have been that?

My memory also puts the Jolly Butcher further up the hill. And open until I left the area in 64.

Dad would catch the 629 to Camden Town for Regent's Park where he worked. He would stand on Spouters Corner waiting, and if a 29 came along (diesel bus - the RT), he'd hang on until he saw a Trolleybus pull out of the depot on the 629 route. Then he'd let the 29 go, for even if it had got further down the road, the faster Trolley would catch and overtake it with ease, giving him time for a cuppa in the cafe up Parkway in Camden.

I was a conductor at Wood Green from 1957/61 many happy memories of the banter and mischief we got up to,I was 17 when I started at West Green depot in Willow Walk,this closed soon after I started and we all moved to Wood Green.The Routemaster came along a little later,I was on the RTs mainly the 29s South Mimms to Victoria.,also the 210 to Finsbury Park,single deckers.I’m 83 now so not many of my old pals left,ah memory Lane!
