Harringay Collegiate School Workbook, Burgoyne Road, 1905

Many thanks to Paul Bridge who sent me this school book to find it a new home.

The inside front cover is marked W.E Rose, 1905. The contents are a series of hand drawn maps of Europe such as the one shown.

From a quick search on Google it seems that collegiate schools were independent schools, very often taking pupils as boarders.

No street number is given for the school. However the Schoolmaster's Yearbook of 1906 showed the principal of the school as a John Walter De Lacy. The Census of 1901 has him living at 39 Burgoyne Road. This is the last of the large houses with steps up to a raised ground floor, on the right hand side as you travel from Wightman to Green Lanes. Also living at the address were Mr De Lacy's wife and daughter, his nephew and an assistant teacher, Louis B de Fontaine. No mention of Mr Rose as early as 1901 however. Next door at number 37 lived a family with 13 members. So the houses are easily large enough to have accommodated a small school. Private schools of such a size were quite common around this period.
