Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Construction of Shopping City (site of Noel Park & Wood Green Station) 1974

This image was shot looking south-east directly at the site of the former Noel Park and Wood Green Station. Here's a picture of the same site just five years earlier.

The Carbuncle

A truly hideous carbuncle. I always felt it looked very threatening and I never enjoyed shopping there.

In my opinion Wood Green was better before the shopping city was built. I used to watch it being built from the window of the flats I lived in as a child.

I actually saw the Shopping Mall bridge across the High Road being constructed.

It's been a couple of years since the last comment, but having been born in Redvers Road just a couple of blocks away, I can remember the occasional tank engine pulling away over the bridge on its way to Palace Gates station. Much of the stairway up to platform level was wood and the whole structure was a bit forlorn. The bollards are still there in that shot, the path beyond led through a mews to Pelham Road. One or two shops to the left of the wallpaper shop was Vincent's newsagents, Vincent being the name of the proprietor, not the shop (or so we were led to believe). Likewise Mum's favourite butcher was called 'Hilda's'. Again, not the name of the butchers shop, but one of the ladies who served there, maybe the owner, or his wife. The shop was a little way beyond the railway bridge on the right as you head towards 'The Alec' and Mayes Road.

Todays Wood Green is an alien place. Last time I visited was in 2002 and saw Redvers Road houses being demolished.

I like the Shopping City. In some ways similar to the British Library, which is wonderful.
