Jolly Butchers Hill seems to have been the favourite Wood Green location for Edwardian postcard photographers. However, despite the number of images taken near this spot, I've included this one because, rather unusually, it face south east.
On the left you can see the portion of the Victorian terrace that was demolished about a quarter of a century after this photo to make way for Wood Green tube station.
In the centre of the picture is what used to be called 'Spouters Corner' and beyond it is a terrace of houses. The Hollywood Green cinema and associated buildings now covers this spot.
On the extreme right you can see evidence of either building or paving work. I'm going to guess that it was the building works for Wood Green Library which stood on that corner and was opened in 1907.

Spouters Corner (not to be confused with Speakers Corner in Hyde Park) was also the Saturday morning spot in the 50s to find the famous (?) escapologist. We spent a lot of time watching him wrestling inside a sack with a set of chains, handcuffs and manacles. All that was missing was the fiery ending if he failed. But he did get his assistant to hoist him a few feet of the ground for some acts.
Would love to know the story of the one legged gentleman on crutches !
Indeed, John Shulver, he looks soldierly enough to have, maybe, mislaid that left leg during the sieges of Ladysmith or Mafeking during the 2nd Boer War. A long way to go to mislay a limb, I agree.
Am I right in saying that Spouters Corner is now the Hollywood Vue?
Yes, Richard, you are
