I saw The Towering Inferno, Jaws, Battlestar Galactica, ABBA The Movie and Star Trek The Motion Picture there. By the time I saw Star Trek it must have been early 1980 and the cinema was rough by then but in the mid to late 70s it was still a decent place to see an occasional film. It had one fairly large screen if I remember. I've always been a bit confused about seeing Jaws there. The film came out in 1975 and I remember my mother taking me there to see it. Even if it was a year later in1976 I would have been 11 years old but wasn't Jaws an X certificate?
No - not your error. My memory of the late 50s was 6d to get in but 3d for an ice lolly and 4d for the Poppets.
Inflation! I definitely paid 6d for each in mid/late 60s as I remember taking 3 silver six penny pieces in my pocket.
Ah well, my last visit would have been in 1959 or even 58!
Taking Patrick’s point on the hyped up kids (and we were). I remember every 5 or 6 rows of seats had a moniter and when it was time to leave they raised their paddles with a letter on it and those rows under their command filed out. I seem to recall it was quite controlled but I doubt it was angelic. Loved Saturday morning "pictures". I think Mum and Dad liked them too. Peace and quiet on a Saturday morning, all for a tanner, bliss. I'm surprised I did'nt have more siblings.
Anyone remember the manager in late 50s? McCarthy was it?
So OK - how many of use here actually sat in the ABC (or the Colly) on a Saturday in the years between 1953 and 1964? I remember an Elileen (?) and a Joan Miller, a Pamela Beaver (still know her, now married, children etc) , a long dark-haired girl Lizzie? And a Janet Savage I think. Brian Warren, Joe Hodson, Richard Yardsomething, Jimmy ?Fossett? , Bob Pritchard. Keith Miller (no, not that one!)
I sat in the Colly between those years Richard but I ain't none of them !! Very fond memories.
Richard, I lived in Stanhope Gardens from 1946 to 1966. I remember my cousin Derek Smith and maybe my brother Raymond, taking me to the Saturday morning flicks at the Colly. Must have been early 50s. There was a Savage family living at the top of Stanhope. Mrs. Savage used to keep my brother.
