Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Birkbeck Road (east side), Hornsey, c1900
Birkbeck Road was one of three British Land Company estates built-up off Hornsey High Street from the 1870s. Built as part of the Grove House Estate, it merged with the neighbouring St Mary's Estate. Between them there were ten roads. With the exception of the mansion blocks on the west side of Birkbeck Road and also those behind them on Middle Lane, all the houses were demolished in the 1970s. They were replaced by council housing and what is now the Greig Academy.

Such a shame to have been demolished, like so many other housing developments. I think it's a rather nice looking terrace.

That's what I thought. It supposedly deteriorated beyond economic repair by the 70s. I'm not so sure that they would be so quick to knock it down these days though.
It was one of four roads on the Grove House Estate. The history is given here. It was developed in the second half of the 1860s on land brokered by the Birkbeck Freehold Land Society. To it's east and south was the St Mary's Estate, brokered by the British Land Company. There's quite a story to these now disappeared estates. It's one I tell through another estate a little further south, in a book to be published later this year by the Hornsey Historical Society.
