That's our street! Fabulous. I've seen a similar photo courtesy of the lovely Crouch End Historical Society, but I don't think the quality is as good as this one. I'd love to get a copy of the print, maybe blown up to a large size. Do you know how I could get hold of it?
Emma
What size picture are you hoping for, Emma?
By the look of the additions to the chimney pots, there must have been servere problems with smoke on the lower part of the street approx ten years after completion. I think this is earlier than 1914. About 1905 - 1910 I would say.
Does the whitening of the telegraph poles indicate that people had been walking into them on the dark and smoky street?
You are so good at noticing details in these pics Stephen. You make me feel like I go round with my eyes half closed.
hi Hugh - sorry haven't come back to you, have been thinking about this. I'm slowly putting together the idea of several smaller images of our street, maybe one from each decade, in a collection. Depends on what's available I guess...Where do you get the images from, I'd love to go and have a rummage one day?
The pictures come from all over, Emma. Some I find by actively seeking them out, some are sent to me, some I stumble across.
Ben,
The largest size I have is 972 x 591 px. And, yes I can send you and unwatermarked copy. How would you feel about making a contribution to our running costs in return?
How neat and tidy the roads were in those days! Can't wait till the oil runs out! (only joking)
This is where they filmed bits of Shuan of the Dead, He lived on the right if this is Weston Park jnc and the grocers shop is still there......
