This is similar to other images I've added, but the angle is unusual in that it takes in the old pub building along with the terrace of shops to its north.

Whats the star in the middle of the image? or is it an optical illusion?
I'm not sure. This came up before. I've tried looking up Meux Brewery (later Frairy Meux) and it doesn't look like their trade mark. So I'm not sure
One of the descendants of James and Amelia Swinyard who ran the tavern at the time (you can see their name over the door) joined HOL and commented on the thread linked to above and she didn't know either (but she added a picture of the Swinyards).
I agree that it was a much more beautiful looking pub. It used to have huge gardens too. I've given a potted history of the pub here.
Great to see the pub as it was. Also the bus garage round the corner, next door that used to be covered in beautiful Virginia creeper that was a gorgeous red in winter and green the rest of the year - very sadly all removed a few years ago.
