Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Note that when the photo was taken, the buildings on the left are still all private houses. The buildings with the taller roofs are two of the three houses that were converted to make the Toll Gate pub in December 1988, just over a quarter of a century after the photo was taken.

Any idea how/why those houses were converted to make The Toll Gate pub and how it became a Weatherspoons?

See Martin’s comment here. The three houses first became a motor dealer and then became a pub. I assume it was just part of the trend in the mid part of the century to increase retail space. There was Also a terrace of houses on Woodgreen high Road immediately to the north of the Wellington. Those went earlier in the 20th century and were replaced with the early 20th century buildings. You see there today. I think it was just about the area changing. We’re Green high Road became fully commercial and Turnpike Lane went most of the way.

Thanks Hugh, I’d forgotten the car dealership but now reminded I can visualise cars parked on the front forecourt and bunting style flags strung across them fluttering in the breeze to attract customer interest and attention.
I read Martin’s comments with admiration for Tammy and her intentions; wish all involved much success!
