The large building, centre right, was The Athenaeum. This ornate edifice was built as a music hall but was also used as a community meeting place. After WWI it was put to a range of uses including a Cinema and a Synagogue. It was eventually demolished in the mid 60s to be replaced by Sainsbury's.
To the left, the hedge and trees belonged to a row of large villas built at angle to the corner, paralell with Firs Avenue to their rear. This is where the Odeon/Everyman now stands.
