Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As crazy as it may sound, it seems that Haringey did indeed float the idea of a monorail as part of the Seventies redevelopment of Wood Green. So crazy in fact that I've included the back of the photo r prove it's not a hoax.

Monorails were in fashion in the sixties and early seventies (see the monorail in Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451). There have been many recurrences of the crazy "monorail the full length of Oxford Street" in various forms. These seem to be off the table right now, but have been replaced by the pedestrianised-Oxford-Street, which strikes me as being just as crazy. But that, of course, is a whole other story.

Doesn't go away - that Hyper Loop idea is an offspring. First I saw was in the Eagle - Dan Dare's 'city' had one I recall.

Dan Dare lived in London didn't he? Perhaps not Wood Green. And in 1996 the DLR would have been running, and that's driverless...so perhaps they weren't so far off the mark! The likes of Norman Foster took the Eagle so there are small bits of modern London that resembles Dan Dare's.
