Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This building stood to the eastern side of Tottenham Lane. You can see the church which remains today near the corner of Rokesley Road.

If you'd like to learn more about the history of Harringay , see my article on Wikipedia providing an overview of the History of Harringay. The series box at the top of that page will take you to more detailed articles I've sketched out on periods in Harringay's history.

Thanks Adrian. Is this a local history quest for you or a family one?

Hi Hugh and JoeW, I'am very interested in your board in referrance to the Cozens family as I'am a relative from John Cozens. In one of JoeW posts April 30 2017 he talks about a Charles Smith of Muswell Hill I would like to know what information you might have on this person as another relative of mine way back was a Charles Smith.

Yours sincerely Nic Cozens-Smith

Hi Nic. Welcome. When I saw your email address on your application, I hoped you might be a member of the Hornsey Cozens family. Do you have any insights about the Cozens and Harringay Farm?

PS: This doesn't help - a second Harringay Farm on Green Lanes (from Barnet Press 6 March 1880).

Joe, I've tried to find conformation that Collingwood's Manor Farm was an older name for the building on Tottenham Lane - as yet to no avail. What I have found though is reference to the well known Manor Cottages being located at "Manor Place, Tottenham Lane". They were almost slap-bang opposite "Harringay Farm". So that does lend weight to a manorial building being located thereabouts and possibly an earlier manorial function for Harringay Farm.

Hi Hugh thanks for the welcome. All I known is that John Cozens (died 1760) worked for Henry Cole then on Henry death became the owner of all his lands this include lands around the Harringay/Horsay area. I would like to find where John Cozens came from I have an idea that is was from the family living in Cozens Manor/ Harringay Farm.

The passage I quoted from a reliable source on page 1 of the comments above says that he was “of Magdalen Laver”. However even reliable sources get things wrong. The only certain way is to dig up original documents. It’s worth seeing if the parish records of Magdalen Laver survive.  You might be lucky to find Cozens’ birth recorded.

Nic these references via the National Archives might be worth following up. One of them may throw more light on the Ide connection.

Hi Hugh, yes John Cozens lived and died at Magdalen Laver we have that confirmed but where was he born. My thinking is that he was from Harringay due to the fact that a house in that area had the name or people living there where called Cozens before 1750 and going back to tutor times.

Hi Nic, sorry I have no further information on Mr Charles Smith other than as linked earlier i.e. he is mentioned as a resident of Muswell Hill in "The History Topography and Antiquities of Highgate" which was published in 1888.

Hi JoeW, thanks for the reply. Well that's new information ie the publication and date that may lead on. Cheers Nic
