Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!


Not Harringay, but I just love this picture published in yesterday's Guardian. I'd never seen number plates in a photo of this age before - from this photo looking very much like they do today.

They are not quite 'number plates', but are 'vehicle licence numbers' issued by the 'Public Carriage Office' which was run by the police. They were also carried on the back of buses and trams in London until the late 1940s or early 1950s and were different to the vehicle number.

It's not so clear from et scan, but in the version of the picture in the paper, the size and style of the characters used on eh plates looks very very similar to today's UK number plates.
