Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This is the old refreshment room (now long gone) by the lake. I'd just bought a new Minolta camera so took this photo of the student making some drawings and luckily got the building in.

As a kid we'd get a glass of Tizer for a penny. If we had real pocket-money - an ice cream between two wafers!

The double railing was to guide the queue for the rowing boats.

Most parks seem to have had a miniature railway at some some or other - was there ever a miniature railway in Finsbury Park?

I remember the miniature village being installed. Any info on that?

To us kids the cafe, or should that be refreshment room, was the focal point of the park and very grand. Wish I could find more pictures of it.

I can remember the cafe.  The miniature village was by the main gate in Seven Sisters Road.  Is it still there?

Does anyone know when it was demolished? I was born in 1965 and I'm almost certain I was taken there for ice cream as a small child, but I don't remember it being there by the time I was speeding my Raleigh "Chico" around the park by about 1973.

I remember it as being large, all wooden, painted a greeny-blue, and a very welcoming space inside, but this could all be fantasy. Still, I wish there were something like it there now, not like the present monstrosity.

Joe - it was still there in 68. This is according to my dad's exam drawings for landscaping that are pasted to the wall of our flat as a memory of him. The parks been used like nothing in decades since corona - fantastic to see it being enjoyed so much.

That's a great map, GP. I assume it records what was there along with your dad's design ideas? Is it simple to separate the two?

I used to go fishing in Finsbury park, never caught a thing.

Dad had taught me a bit about it and Mum used to encourage me to get up there and bring home a whopper for tea.

I think they knew there were no fish there but it got rid of me for a few hours in  the school holidays. I still loved it up there though.
