Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

View towards Harringay from Stroud Green Station, July 1981

This image was shot scross the top of Lancaster Road. In the mid-distance is the bridge carrying Oakfield Road across the railway (now Suffragette Line). Not far before the bridge you can see a cutting taking a line to loop across to the Great Northern Line.

This is a very interesting photo taken from a very unusual angle, showing the Tottenham & Hampstead Line disappearing into Crouch Hill tunnel and what was above it. In the mid distance can be seen Harringay Park Junction signal box, which was opened on 8th February 1959. It replaced a previous box dating from 1940 and the 1888 Crouch Hill station box and was interesting for operating semaphore signals on the up (westbound) line and colour light signals on the down line. This box was abolished in a resignalling scheme in 2010, when control of the area was transferred to South Tottenham box and new LED 3-aspect signals installed. The signal box was demolished and a REB (Remote Equipment Building) installed, adjacent to the site.
