Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

It's easy to forget that until the mid 19th Century West Green was bigger than Wood Green. Even the Queen's Head by Duckett's Common was referred to as West Green.
Blackboy Lane took its name from the former pub which had probably existed since 1690.
The earliest recorded name of West Green Road was Black Hope Lane. This changed to Blackup Lane before being renamed as West Green Road.

Decidedly N15 now - nearly a mile from Queens head. But living alongside the QH we would often shop up West Green before the self-service shops arrived. (Mid 50s)

I notice on Google that the line of the old railway still shows clearly heading off north west.

I think back in the mid-nineteenth century, Richard, West Green was the nearest settlement to the QH. Wood Green was still concentrated up near the current Ally Pally station and Harringay hadn't yet been even imagined.

Oh, thats why that club on the corner of Clinton Rd N15 is called The Banc. It was at the time of this great pic, a London & Provincial Bank. I pass here a lot these days on the 41, I've only just realised the location.
As kids we'd get the 41 up here to Downhill's Park, to hire a bike & learn to cycle in the mini-roads. Or walk up to Ward Stores. [I bought one of their light fittings when they closed down.] There was a swap shop here somewhere, and a shop where we could see them rolling sticks of rock..... Here was the railway station on the right...
