"The Egg Shop" Green Lanes c1965

Absolutely brilliant Hugh. I often mention The Egg Shop when talking about life in the past. I would visit here once a week as a child when my mother went on her weekly egg shop from Turnpike Lane to Harringay. I remember the wooden shelving and the stacked eggs of many sizes and colours. The shop front was open, much like a greengrocers. Is this an “impression” or a photograph? I’m surprised at the colour in the image.

This shop was one of my most enduring memories of Green Lanes; it was on the opposite side of the road as we walked from our home in Roseberry. The lady stood there with a shop full of eggs just fascinated me as a child! I never noticed the name but always remember ‘The Noted Egg Merchant’ sign. Thanks for that.

Lydia, when I initially saw the photo, I thought it looked like aSeventies image. But I couldn't find any trace of it having been there after 1965. In the text below the photo I originally wrote, "The shop was run by Chaim S Rosberg and his wife Margaretha between 1931 and at least 1965" (now updated). I chose my words carefully. I could only find evidence up until 1965. But I felt that the photo was later.

Following your comment, I zoomed in on my larger copy of the photo and can see the yellow price on the door of the Chemist next door is 14p. So, this was photo taken post-decimalisation which puts it post-February 1971. That works for me as far as the look of the photo goes.

Towards the end of its days they  also had secondhand clothes in there.

But it was a very unique shop only selling eggs and made a living.

This is just as I remember it as a child in the 1950's/60's.  The lady who sold the eggs always looked as though she had just stepped away from the farm. Her grey hair done in a bun. This has brought back such memories.

Just a few doors down was the Launderette where my Mum took her bagwash each week.  Living in a flat above one of the shops it was difficult to wash sheets etc although we had a back yard for hanging out the washing.

Just noticed the name above the shop as Grosberg but the owners name, as stated above, was Rosberg.  Wonder why the difference?

Christine, it is Grosberg. My rendering was a typo. Thanks for pointing it out - now fixed.

I remember this too - used to get sent to this shop to get a dozen eggs as a child. The lady had white hair it was alwasy in a bun and she wore a crisp white apron. Oh those were the days.

I have such fond memories of this shop. The lady I remember was Polish and very sweet. We lived up Warham road. So nice to find this photograph. I also remember Newmans, the men wore brown shop coats, and everything was sold in large baskets and scooped and then weighed on large weighing scale. Would be trendy now.
