Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
The Astorian
The Astoria cinema in Finsbury Park opened in August 1930.
This souvenir programme issued to commemorate the opening gives details of its construction.
The theatre is described as 'British To the Core; British Brains, British Money - and Trade Union Conditions'. Tonnes of British steel were used in its construction and the directors specified the employment of British workers according to strict trade union conditions.
This venue was the fourth in a chain of 'luxurious' Astoria theatres to open in London in just over a year.

Lets all hope that one day the UCKG will implode and we can have our old cinemas back.
Latest one they have bought is the last cinema in Walthamstow, they have been refused planning permission for yet another church, and now refuse to release it back to the community.

Also a truly a fantastic interior. The first time I was taken there by an auntie, in about 1949 and we had tea and cake upstairs, served by a waitress in traditional black dress and white apron and cap, the 'nippie' outfit.
The star shaped fountain had goldfish in the pool.
In the auditorium I was always captivated by the twinkling stars in the celing!

The story I was told as a child that this was built for a prince whose boat went dawn on the way over to England. Does anyone know if this was true?
