Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This photo is on a postcard postmarked 1910. I've been trying to place the house. Scanning maps, particularly the detailed 1895 Town Plan, I've considered the following elements:

  • Detached, not set far back from the road.
  • Flat front (not bays) with steps at the centre.
  • Looks like a bay on the left hand side.
  • Conservatory on the right hand side.
  • There's a barely decipherable house number, possibly 126, and a name that is probably "Westlake House."

I thought at first it might be on Tollington between Stroud Green & Hornsey Roads. I also looked to the south and south east of the Finsbury Park park. So far I've been unable to match it.

Of course, just because it was posted in Finsbury Park, doesn't necessarily mean the photo was taken nearby, but it probably was.

Any ideas?

Team work, Hugh and so interesting. I also considered if this was a boarding house at some time. The two ladies at front of house (possibly third in lower left window?) just gave me that feeling. I see what you mean about the age of Lucy Lawson. Difficult one, but if it were me, I would go for 61.

One little titbit I've come up with on Miss Lawson was that apparently she was or fancied herself as something of a songwriter. Perhaps pining for her days in the Raj, in 1912, she wrote the words for "Rule King Emporer".

Lucy appears to have returned to Blighty in the mid-1890s and, I think died during the Great War.

As to the house, no conservatory was shown on the1895 town plan, but it was sown on the 1938 version, shown below (and in the photo above) suggesting that it was erected in the late 19th/early 20th century.

Great work Les, I don't think there's any argument in identification of that house !  And to find all 14 chimney pots still in situ, wow.  So I wasn't too far out in my thought on Clissold Park area then. Something inside me triggered that thought straight away........!  And to add I've been out of area for 53 years now.  I did work in a private house in Paget Road which is near to Grayling for about one year back  around 1965.  But Hugh, age to me looks like 41.  Great site Hugh, love it !

The original photo is so selectively framed it would do an estate agent credit! “This delightful five bedroom detached property with conservatory…. Ooops! Sorry, it’s actually the end of a terrace….” No wonder the postcard was a puzzle, but the speed of solution by the HoL collective is very impressive.
