Comment by Old-Age-Emporium(OAE) on July 16, 2009 at 21:52: Meryl, it seems the roof caught fire (??electrical fault??) while a couple of workmen happened to be repairing a hole in the roof from the scaffolding you see in Paul's photo. They were unable to extinguish it, so it spread.
No, I never heard what exactly caused it. Act of God? Act of the Devil? Act of the Insurers? Anyway, all's well that ends well. I like Dixon Court flats which replaced it. I like the interior of the new St Paul's. But the building leaves me cold, even if it's supposedly inspired by a classical megaron. It does have its admirers on this site!

Comment by Teresa Wilson on February 5, 2017 at 18:09: Such a pity. I was christened there in about 1963 as were my brother's and sister in the late 50s and 60s respectively. I went to Sunday school and sang (not very well), in the choir. We got paid for weddings! I remember the vicar Mr Barraclough and I often used to play with his children in the vicarage. It was a lovely house. I also remember the Verger who I think was called Mr Blood (or it could've been Mr Flood). I imagine it was the former as I have vague memories of conjuring up images of Dracula.

Confirmation classes & First Communication (Mr Barraclough)

I was married there

Went to Sea Rangers there (Skip & Cap), my sisters were Guides. Made many friends

Confirmation classes (Mr Barraclough) and First Communion

I was married there
My two children were christened there

Very many happy memories of a different Harringay

Was devastated by the fire - some of my history disappeared. Did not like the aggressive red brick replacement and never visited.
