Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This photo was added to my page by member Geoff Baker with the following message:

I am attaching the photo of my Great Grandfather’s shop 449/451 Green Lanes Harringay (bottom of Duckett).

Samuel Gent Baker started the shop in 1896 (+/- 2 years) and my grandfather - Ernest Guy Baker took it on until his death in 1936 then May Helen Helen Baker continued on until her retirement

If you have access to any other Baker references I would be really keen to know

Thanks

Geoff Baker

Samuel Baker seems to have set up shop by 1902 (I'm not sure exactly when he started). He died on August 18th 1912 and passed the business on to Ernest. It looks like Samuel also had a business up in Winchmore Hill.

From 1902 to 1914 it occupied 449 & 451 Green Lanes and traded as Baker S. Gent. by 1920 it was trading as Baker's Drapers. In 1921 Ernest added 453a. In 1927 he added 455.

I was interested to see some quite interesting adverts in the Tottenham and Edmonton Weekly Herald. I've reproduced a season's worth below - March 1909 to Jan 1910.

Alan, re your comment June 15, 2019 :  Greenaways Stationers was somewhere up that way but I don't visualise them as occupying a corner plot.  It was at least a double fronted unit, (possibly more ?)Had a lovely centraI staircase up to first floor.   I remember the devastating fire there 50s/60s time.
