St. Ann's Road station opened on 2nd October 1882 and closed on 9th August 1942. It had wooden platforms which were swept away by the end of the 1940s, which is why there there are no traces to be seen from the train today.
Fantastic picture as I live round the corner. After the brick building was demolished, a hut was erected as a newsagent. I was a paper boy there in the late 60s, it was run by a guy called "Nobby".
There were 7 paper boys working there at one time and I was the "chief paper boy" delivering The Sporting Life racing paper to the betting shop in St Ann's Road, next to what used to be The Victoria pub.
I was told by Nobby that if I lost the paper to the betting shop, I would be sacked! At Christmas, Nobby would leave out a big jar with the sign: "For the Paper Boys" then take all the money for himself and give the boys an alarm clock and Mars bar! When I came home with these, my mum said, "Where's the collection money?" (He had a lot of customers, so it was a big collection). I said this is all I got! My mum stormed round to his shop, and told him in no uncertain terms that if he didn't pay out the money to the boys, she'd tell the police. I did get some of the collection, but never new if it was the amount collected divided by seven.
