There was a receiving office for the Silverdale Laundry at the bottom of Allison Road in the middle of the last century. I have been unable to locate where the actual laundry was.
Harringay had four principal laundries through the first half of the 20th century
- Oakwood Laundry, by Colina Road
- Hermitage / Cyprus Laundry, by Hermitage Road
- Oceana Laundry in Green Lanes / St Ann's Road
- Wise's Laundry, Colina Road.

Saturday mornings in the 50s we used to play roller hockey on their car park....
At N22 we had such wicker laundry baskets which we would play hide and seek in.
However, during the war they were changed for Fibre ones and I still have one in the loft, it is marked from 'Birkbeck Laundry Enfield'.
Our Dad worked at The Oakwood Laundry off Green Lanes, Harringay sometime during the 40/50's. We had a fabulous big wicker basket from there, much the same as the one illustrated but with two leather strap fastenings and "Oakwood Laundry" stencilled in black. It must have been about 2ft 6" x 18" x 12+" deep. It served as my first "bed" before being upgraded to a bottom drawer of a large chest of drawers ! That basket withstood years of battering as a plaything. I remember it fondly. And we also had a fibre one consisting of a base and full lid. Two all round khaki canvas straps secured the lid. It was mid brown in colour with bulbous corner reinforcers. Nowhere near as much fun as the wicker one but still very hardy. That was still in use as a drum accessory case till the early 70's.
