The postcard maybe from 1910 - But I think the photo is about ten years older than that !

Love these old pictures Hugh. Thanks for posting. They even used the old English way of spelling it.

Irene, the seven sisters refers to a ring of beautiful old trees which once stood in the centre of the area -- of course the council brought them down at some point probably for no particular reason. They since replanted a new ring of trees, but it's not the same is it! :)

What happened in 1955?

Comment by Hugh on January 17, 2012 at 15:22

I'm not sure exactly when the early 20th century trees disappeared, but 1955 is when my evidence trail failed (via the link I gave on Wikipedia). It was just a matter of not having the time to dig any deeper. I'm sure if anyone's interested the trail can be picked up and followed without too much difficulty.

The trees were, as far as I know, replanted in 1955.. but fell victim to the Victoria Line workings which took over the whole of Page Green site at Seven Sisters for most of the 1960s.. A set were planted in the 1970s I think..  I wrote on the wiki site in 2003:

The Seven Sisters, situated on Page Green, Tottenham; were originally Elms planted in circle, and in [[1840]] were said to be about 500 years old. The trees were replanted in 1886, a little further to the east by the (7) Hibbert sisters. Seven Lombardy Poplars were again replanted on [[31st December]] [[1955]] by the (7) Basten sisters.

This has since been edited out..
