And so, from about  1955 yo 1959 I was the evening paper boy at this shop and occasional morning paper boy. The boss also used me as a knocker up when the regular lad was away. Knocking up was a 5 a,m. job putting the paper in to order for the boys to deliver.

My evening round started with three paper to deliver to about 50 houses- Star, News and Standard but the Star died when the Daily Sketch folded in 55/56 I think. That I did on a push bike.

I also did a Sunday round which was even then heavy and got worse as the colour supplements started to appear.

Even back then shop names were overtaken by advertising banners. Do you remember the shop's/shop owner's name?

I wish. It was run by a married couple. I would hesitate to be sure but Frank rings a bell.

Hi Richard do you remember Brian Fox that lived above Westerns laundry ? If my memory serves me correctly.

Knew a couple of Brians. One lived in Frobisher the other I know not where. Did you know a John  Jeffreys? or a Robert Mitchie?

I don't recall those Brians what about Brian Kingsley ? He lived in Wightman Road between Falkland Road and Frobisher Road, his father was a postman. Brian Haggers father was a steeple jack he also lived there almost opposite Brian Kingsley.

Looking longer into this image I think it may be during the period I worked there! I say that on the basis of the brands all coinciding. Guards were fairly new in the 50s and I think had gone by the late 60s. Notice too that The Sun advert is very low key - in keeping with the form of the paper before that Murdoch person took over! Again dating the image. And finally I think the newspaper are on a rack to the far left5 which was where they were moved just before I left in 1962 to make space for the cakes display in front of window. Which suggests the new owners who dispensed with me among others!.

Are you sure your last reply was meant for me? I've not discussed any of that with you.

We lived in Coleraine Road from 1952 - 1962 so Turnpike Lane was our go to shopping area.  I remember a stationary shop run by the Duncan Family (who became family friends).  A tobacconist run by a real “old character” and wife, their daughter marrying a USAF serviceman called Hank Moreno.  My favourite shop of all being Garrisons dealing in all aspects of hobby items and bikes.  What a wonderful shop it was (or seemed!), model railways, balsa wood of all shapes and size, aero engines, Humbol paint in every colour and everything for your push bike - heady days😁.

I loved Garrisons but could never afford much though, only things like jet ex I think it was called we used fix them to our dinky cars. Then light the ends they used fly across the school playground with everyone standing back and watching it whizzed very fast it was great.
