Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Seven Oaks pub used to stand at 97 White Hart Lane at the junction with Winkfied Road.

The earliest mention I can find is from 1869. This mention came in a newspaper report in the Tottenham and Edmonton Weekly Herald. It relates to a report of a crime committed by one of the pub's lodgers. This rather down-at-heel impression persists through the following 50 years, during which time all the newspaper reports relate to dodgy dealings by lodgers or to the watering down of beer by the landlord.

For the first part of its life until into the Twentieth Century, the business seems to have been known as The Seven Oaks Beerhouse.

At some point in the early decades of the Twentieth Century (I suspect the Twenties or Thirties), the building depicted above was replaced by a Mock Tudor one which stills today. The business changed its name to Skolars and ceased trading in the first decade of this century. It was converted to residential use in 2013.

Used to walk past this on my way to and from school between 1975 & 1980.

Was it still Seven Oaks at that point, Tony?

I lived about 100 yards from this pub between 1966 and 1981 and it was always known as the Seven Oaks during that time. I also remember the other pub at the bottom end of Winkfield Road called the Freemasons Arms which since I left the area has been demolished and rebuilt as a Tesco express.

Cheers, Tony. I think we exchanged comments about the Freemason's Arms on this post. I've now been able to track down the story of the pub on the corner of Acacia Road and have added a comment under that image.

I used to play football for their Sunday team in the early 70's.

Such a vibrant pub back then.
