I'd guess that 60 pounds a week takings in 1917 was a considerable sum!

How absolutely fascinating - I missed this when you first posted it, but his case makes for an interesting read. He appears to have persuaded the tribunal several times to make him exempt until the end of the war.

I wonder what took him out of Russia to London.

Oh wow what a record.  I guess old Mr Raphael must have guarded that lot with his life as his life possibly depended on them.   These could so easily have been discarded by descendents on his death.   

I wonder how his brother faired in The King's Colours ?

And what a wonderful letter from the aircraft company.   Such politeness in days gone by !
